World Peace: “Remain Resolute, Build Platforms, Global Culture For Equal Treatment Of People” – ICMC Charges Stakeholders

A call has gone to mediators and key players in peace building process to uphold their commitment in promoting dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among individuals and nations.

The Chairman, Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) Abuja Branch, Mallam Abdur-Rahman Adebayo Aderinoye, fondly called, ARA gave the charge at the Institute’s September General Meeting held recently at the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre in Area 11, Abuja.

He advocated for the acceleration of platforms that bridge differences and encourage a shared dedication to peace, transcending racial and national boundaries.

He emphasized that the primary objective of every critical stakeholder should be the cultivation of a global culture of peace founded on the principle of equal treatment for all.

Aderinoye traced the roots of the International Day of Peace back to September 30, 1981, when the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 36/67, urging a global ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities on that day.

“Every third (3rd) Tuesday of September each year was declared as the International Day of Peace with the first official observance taking place on September 21, 1982, and later in 2001, i.e. two decades after.

“However, it was in 2002 that the United Nations General Assembly declared every 21st day of September as ‘International Day of Peace’ to be celebrated annually” ARA explained.

He therefore noted that since then, every 21st of September has been instrumental in promoting dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among people and nations.

The ICMC Abuja Branch Chairman further highlighted the significance of the International Day of Peace, describing it as a platform to bridge divides and nurture a shared commitment to peace, regardless of race or nationality.

He also stressed that the day’s goal is to establish a global culture of peace where everyone is treated equitably.

He affirmed, “The International Day of Peace serves as an opportunity to educate individuals about the importance of peaceful coexistence and conflict prevention, with the ultimate aim of creating a non-violent and harmonious world.

It unquestionably provides a platform for communities and individuals to contribute to a more peaceful world.”

This year’s International Day of Peace, themed “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the Global Goals,” has been emphasized by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to underscore our collective responsibility in advancing peace and highlight the critical role of peace in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as emphasize the need to engage diverse actors, including the 1.2 billion young people worldwide, to ensure the success of these goals.
