WAEC gives details on re-sit process for Nigerian candidates
Days after the re-introduction of re-sit option, the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has clarified that the resit option for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, is not a new development for Nigerian candidates.
In a release signed by the WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs in Ghana, John Kapi, mentioned the resit option during an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show on December 31, 2024.
However, the remarks created confusion regarding its implementation in Nigeria.
,,,Dr Amos Dangut, the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria Office, explained that the resit process has been in place for over six years.
While speaking on Monday, he said, “School candidates who fail certain subjects during their formal schooling are not required to retake the entire exam. They can opt for the private candidate exam and resit only the failed subjects.”
Dr Dangut addressed speculation about the February resit option. He clarified that it is part of the private candidate exam structure, which provides opportunities for individuals to remedy their results.

____“As for the recent discussions, this is not a new concept in Nigeria,” he stated.
“Candidates who fail specific subjects during their school exams have always been able to take the private candidate exams as a remedial step.”
_____He further highlighted that the private candidate exams include a flexible structure for retaking subjects.
____“This resit option has been instrumental for many Nigerians in securing their WAEC certification,” he added.
Dr Dangut also explained that the recent announcement from Ghana pertains to a growing demand for resit options in that country.
____“In Ghana, this development might seem new, but for us in Nigeria, it has been an established practice,” he said.
He clarified the distinction between school and private candidate exams.
“After completing formal schooling, candidates cannot retake the entire exam. Instead, they focus on the specific subjects they need to improve by taking the private candidate exam,” he noted.
Dr Dangut urged candidates and stakeholders to remain informed about the existing WAEC processes.
,_”’“Our priority is to ensure clarity and provide students with the necessary opportunities to achieve academic success,” he concluded.
____This clarification follows public interest in the remedial examination options available to WAEC candidates across West Africa
