Varsity Don Expresses Concern Over Increase In Crime Rate, Drug Abuse In Nigeria

A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko Ondo State in Nigeria, Dr. Akin Olawale Oluwadayisi and the Convener of the Campaign Against Drug Abuse held in Oba Akoko, Ondo State Nigeria has expressed concern over alarming rate of crime due to drug abuse in Nigeria.

The campaign which was held with the Oba-Akoko National Students Association (ONSA), in collaboration with the Oba Akoko Youth Forum and Daniel Heritage Ministry was aimed at addressing the pressing issue of drug abuse among youth and students.

The event was held on on the 25th of July, 2024 at the newly constructed Town Hall, dedicated to the late Oba Adeniyi Adegoroye, the Oloba of Oba-Akoko Kingdom attracted distinguished personalities and gathering of community leaders and stakeholders. The Regent Aderonke Adegoroye, the Oloba-in-Council, and notable High Chiefs were in attendance, alongside Dr. Akin Olawale Oluwadayisi, who served as the convener of the event.

Dr. Oluwadayisi expressed deep concern over the alarming rate at which drug abuse and how it is contributing to a global rise in crime, including Nigeria. He highlighted the severe repercussions of drug abuse to individual and households, which have led to significant sorrow and calamity. He also emphasized the need for continuous enlightenment and advocacy efforts to combat this scourge effectively.

Barr. Sekoni Damilola, the Guest Speaker who is a Magistrate and founder of Daniel Heritage Foundation, delivered an insightful Talk on the dangers of drug abuse and the crucial role of prevention. His talk resonated with the audience, reinforcing the importance of community action in tackling this menace.

Dr. Omoniyi, and spiritual leaders including Bishop Wale Aiyegbusi of Flame of Fire World Outreach and the Imam of Oba-Akoko, lent their support to the initiative, further emphasizing the communal commitment to addressing drug abuse. A representative from the Divisional Police Officer Oka-Akoko and officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) also participated, underscoring the collaborative approach to the addressing the menace.

In her address, the Regent Aderonke Adegoroye vowed to consistently oppose drug abuse and similar detrimental acts. Her commitment was met with resounding support from all attendees.

The campaign engaged all public and private schools in Oba, as well as members of the Oba Akoko National Students Association and the Oba Youth Forum. The programme featured a series of informative sessions, interactive discussions, and a pledge from all participants to continue to work together to prevent drug abuse.


The success of this event underscores the community’s dedication to creating a safer and healthier environment for its youth. The collective efforts of all attendees demonstrates a strong and unified stance against the scourge of drug abuse.
