Protest against Emir of Kano: Police nab six
,,,,,The Kano State Police Command has taken into custody six individuals who participated in a protest on Sunday, where they allegedly demanded the removal of the current Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, and the reinstatement of the dethroned Emir Sanusi Lamido.
Addressing the media on Monday, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Usaini Gumel, disclosed that the police have identified six people who were part of the protesting crowd that caused disruptions during the re-commissioning of the Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital.
,,,,,,The hospital is situated close to the Palace of Emir Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, who was present at the event.
The protest saw the participants chanting provocative slogans against the Emir of Kano, with cries such as “new governor, new Emir.” The demonstrators urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to remove the current Emir and install a new one, citing the change in government as their reason.
Mr Gumel revealed that the police have employed technology to identify those involved in the protest and that efforts are being made to apprehend more individuals, including those who may have sponsored the demonstration.
He asserted that the intrusion of these individuals, who were not invited to the event, is an affront to the traditional institution, emphasizing that anyone who disrespects it becomes an enemy of the police.
,,,,,,Regarding crime in the state, Commissioner Gumel mentioned that since he took up the role as the Kano State Commissioner of Police, about 100 repentant criminals have surrendered themselves along with their weapons to the police.
He noted that these individuals are aiding the police in tracking down other criminals who are still in hiding.
As for the issue of female criminals engaged in phone snatching and other crimes, he stated that while such cases are not widespread, the intelligence department of the police is actively addressing the matter.
,,,,,He urged the public to collaborate with the police by providing information on areas where female criminals are known to operate.
The Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim, expressed the union’s commitment to inform the public about the steps taken by the police to combat crime and create a safer state.
He also commended the efforts of the Kano State Police Command in encouraging notorious suspects to surrender themselves and their weapons voluntarily.
,,,,,,Similarly, the Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, Alhaji Aminu Garko, praised the administration led by Mr Gumel for its proactive approach to tackling criminality.
He noted that feedback from the public indicates a reduction in criminal activities, urging the command to persist in its efforts.
In conclusion, the partnership between the police and the media is pivotal in disseminating information to the public, fostering transparency, and promoting law enforcement initiatives.
,,,,,,,,The commitment to curbing criminal activities is evident, and the police are urged to maintain this momentum.
