Osun @33: NUJ Chair, Ajadosu Calls for Urgent Industrialization, Energy Reform
As Osun State celebrates its 33rd anniversary, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Osun State, has called for urgent attention to the state’s industrialization and energy sectors.
Speaking during the anniversary celebration and the commissioning of the newly renovated NUJ Hall, Ajadosu emphasized that Osun cannot solely rely on federal support for its development.
“Osun is not industrially developed; we basically depend on the federal government, and that can’t sustain us,” Ajadosu remarked. “There’s a pressing need for industrialization. For instance, the steel rolling company that was bought here isn’t operating at full capacity, with machines running at just 30% efficiency. This situation is not favorable for our state’s growth.”
Ajadosu also stressed the importance of developing a state grid to address the energy challenges faced by Osun. He noted that the state’s energy distribution has declined, which could undermine the influx of people moving to Osun for better opportunities. “We need to look at developing a state grid where we can generate and distribute our own electricity.
The current power distribution is sapping our strength, and the government needs to address this urgently,” he urged.
Reflecting on the progress made since Osun’s creation in 1991, Ajadosu expressed pride in the state’s achievements, particularly in education and media. “Osun is blessed with intellectuals who are knowledgeable and well-educated. If you look at poverty indices, we are better off than many states, especially those created alongside us,” he said.
Ajadosu also highlighted the role of the media in shaping Osun’s political landscape, praising the state’s journalists for their vibrancy and commitment. “Osun boasts some of the most intelligent journalists in the country. The level of political exposure and consciousness in Osun is unparalleled, and this is largely due to the media’s influence. We engage political candidates rigorously, ensuring they remain accountable even before they take office,” he noted.
In his closing remarks, Ajadosu reaffirmed the NUJ’s commitment to supporting the state’s growth and called on the government and stakeholders to prioritize the industrialization and energy sectors to secure a prosperous future for Osun State.
