Oil tanker overturns and explodes on the highway
A tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as gasoline, exploded in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, on Sunday.
It was learned that the tanker had overturned around 4:45 am as it was heading towards Rounder from Oju-Irin, in the Lafenwa area of Abeokuta.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, public relations manager for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, had earlier confirmed that officials at TRACE, police, Federal Road Safety Corps and firefighters were working diligently to restore normalcy.
Akinbiyi said the transshipment was underway, warning the general public, especially the automotive public domiciled or moving around the axis to remain calm and cooperative.
He also warned the public to avoid scooping up fuel, using a handset and cooking gas so as not to start a fire. ”
However, our correspondent reports that the fallen tanker eventually exploded during the rescue operation.
It could not be immediately confirmed whether there are any casualties at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, motorists entering the Rounder axis from Lafenwa were advised to use the Olomore and Oke-Ata axes respectively as alternative routes.
