Health workers in Osogbo, the Osun State capital have confirmed a sharp increase in the number of clients adopting family planning in 2024 compared to previous years.
Mrs Yusuf Adejoke Kudrat an experienced health worker at Enikanoni Primary Health Centre in Olorunda local government area of Osun state, confirmed the increase to the OsunReporters News Correspondent on Thursday.
While speaking, Mrs Kudrat attributed the increase in family planning clients to the healthy leaving of every nursing mother and economic situation in the country, affirming that women are now coming willingly to take up a method compare to previous experience.
According to her; “Women are now coming out to take up family planning due to the sensitization on the need to adopt it. I think one of the reasons is the health of every nursing mother who decided not get pregnant at the wrong time.
“The other reason is that the economy is not friendly, and people are now wiser. Some wives even came with their spouses to take up a method.
“Our records this year alone will up to 400 new clients, because it is increasing monthly. We’ve attended to about 45 clients this month and today is the last DA of October.
She also confirmed that some mothers are coming with their adolescent daughters to embrace family planning to avoid unwanted pregnancies which can result in loss of lives while planning to terminate it.
“Meanwhile, mothers are now bringing their adolescent girls to take up a method. They prefer their children to have family planning rather than having unplanned pregnancies and attempting to terminate them, which can result in loss of lives.”
When asked about the side effects of the family planning, Mrs Kudrat dispelled the misconceptions about family planning, urging those who are yet to take up a method to do so.
She lauded the efforts of the state government in providing the necessary things for the medical attention of the people especially in the area of family planning.
“Before we put anyone on family planning, we first conduct a test and make sure the person is not pregnant, after which we will talk to them and decide the best method to adopt. We’ve not gotten a situation whereby someone will take up a method and get pregnant. That used to occur during the olden days but not now.
“I urge our people to come forward to take up a method. It is free of charge. I must thank the state government for making it free of charge for our people.”
Another health worker, Mrs Tanimomo also confirmed the increase in number of clients this year, adding that sthe facility records show more than one-hundred clients monthly during outreach engagement with residents.
“In recent times, there has been an increase in numbers of clients, especially during outreach engagement with people. We’ve recorded about 160 monthly during outreach while about 45 clients monthly during in-reach.
Below are some testimonies from beneficiaries during an interview with the OsunReporters Correspondent:
Mrs Jubril Aminat from Kolawole Area of Osogbo: “This is my first time of embracing family planning after giving birth to my first child. I didn’t feel any discomfort during that period since about two years.
“It allowed me and my husband to plan our schedule of life because I told my husband then and he accepted.
Mrs Dada Omolade from Olorunda local government: “It allowed me to enjoyed myself with my husband and take care of my family. I have more time for my business.
“I want to urge women out there to go for family planning. It is for our own benefit. The one I did was for five years after which I had that of three years before I decided to have another child.
Hajia Salahudeen Omobolale (mother of three): “My experience is very good since I adopted a family plan after my second child. My husband and I were reluctant to do family planning after our first child. But Since I took up this method, I haven’t felt any discomfort and I’m enjoying my husband. Now, we’ve decided not to do long term family planning after three children because of the economic situation, so we can have enough to take care of them.”
