The Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Abubakar has revealed reasons behind his decision to resign as head of the agency.

It should be recalled that Abubakar submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu on Saturday evening at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

While speaking after the brief meeting with the President, Abubakar revealed that personal and family matters were key factors in his decision to step down from his role, thanking President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in the new administration’s first 15 months, noting that he had held the position since 2018.

,,,,According to him; “There are quite a number of reasons one will do that. Some personal family issues, but nothing very serious, actually, and the friendship will continue.”

Abubakar further assured that he would remain committed to matters concerning the country’s security, saying, “I discussed with Mr. President, he understood very well, and I promised to remain steadfast with issues and the security situations of the country.”

“It’s a routine thing, from time to time, to brief Mr. President on situations, on issues, and today is no exception. After the briefing, I tendered my resignation, and Mr. President graciously approved and accepted it,” he stated.

,,,,,,Reflecting on his tenure, Abubakar expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve Nigeria under President Tinubu’s leadership, which he described as “transformational.” He highlighted the extended 15-month period he served in the current administration, acknowledging it as a rare privilege.

,,,,,,Ahmed Abubakar was first appointed as the Director General of the NIA in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who later extended his tenure in December 2021.
