Many Reportedly Dead In An 85- Passenger Boat Accident

,,,,,Disaster struck in the ancient city of Ogbaru
local government area of Anambra state as many lives were lost to a horrible water accident.

A motor boat carrying 85 passengers, including flood victims, who were moving to the low lands sunk, killing many onboard while only 9 passengers were rescued.

,,,,It happened that the passengers were being taken from Ossomala to Nko Ogbakuba market on the boat when it the boat experienced mechanical difficulties near Onukwu Bridge in Umunankwo.

Witnesses stated that the boat was afloat for a period of time until it capsized on Friday at about nine in the morning.

However, only nine people out of the total of 85 passengers were saved, and it is believed that the remaining passengers perished by drowning.

,,,,While responding to the incident, the Coordinator of the Local Emergency Management Committee for the State of Anambra, Mr. Nnamdi Esimai, spoke to newsmen and stated that the bodies of the victims have not yet been recovered from the water because it would take a day for the bodies to become buoyant enough to float to the surface.

….On the other hand, he revealed that there were ongoing efforts to evacuate the dead after they were spotted.

He made the observation that the people who lived by the rivers should be urged to wear life jackets at all times for their own safety.
