GAFAAR AKINDELE ALAMU (AIIN, ACIB): Profile Of An Iconic Broker And NCRIB Western Area Committee Chairman
Mr. Gafaar Akindele Alamu was born to the family of Late Alhaji Mustapha Akande Alamu and Alhaja Silifat Ilelabayo Alamu (Nee Raji). Both parents hailed from Osogbo, the Capital City of Osun State.
Being a son of a teacher, he started primary school very early at the District Council School, Igbon, Ejigbo in Osun State. Due to frequent transfers of his father from one school to the other, he attended three different primary schools and three different secondary schools.
Dele as he is popularly called wished to become a Mathematics teacher like his late father. So after his secondary school education, he proceeded to Oyo State College of Education, Ilesa to study Economics and Mathematics. As an ambitious young boy, he did not waste any time to pursue his University education and he attended University of Benin where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree of Education in Mathematics in 1991.
His diligence and dedication to work was first recognised during his National Youth Service in Niger State. Though he was posted to a very remote school for his primary assignment, he excelled as the Best Corper in Gbako Local Government and won the NYSC State Governor Award in 1992
Dele has a dream of becoming a successful Mathematics teacher but could not realise this dream as he could not take up the only teaching job he got from the Federal Ministry of Education to teach Mathematics at Federal School of Science, Sokoto because of the fear of disintegration of the country that followed the annulment of the Presidential Election of 1993.
His journey into insurance profession started in 1994 as an Ad-Hoc staff member of the Trans Nigeria Assurance, Osogbo Branch, and he was later absorbed as a Graduate Trainee. As a fast learner, he became an Associate member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) in 1998 and rose to become acting Head of Reinsurance and Head of Motor underwriting in 1998- less than four years on the job. His desire for a more challenging and rewarding career development took him to the Prestige Assurance Plc in 1998 and the Royal Exchange Assurance Nigeria Plc in 1999 where he resigned in year 2000 to assume the position of Managing Director/CEO of the Royal Chambers Insurance Brokers Ltd
Mr Alamu holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) in 2002 from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State and an Associate Membership of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers in 2007.
He has attended various local and international courses, trainings, seminars and conferences on insurance and management skills. He has also participated in training people locally and has appeared on various radio and television programmes to discuss insurance and other public issues.
With his modest and unassuming personality, he has been occupying leadership positions since his primary school days, such as Class Captain and Library Prefect in the Primary School. In his undergraduate days, he served as P.R.O. of National Association of Mathematics Students of Nigeria, University of Benin Chapter on two occasions a member of the Students’ Representatives Council and was elected as the President of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria while he was made the General Secretary of the Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria, Niger State and National Financial Secretary & National Treasurer in 1992. He is currently occupying different leadership positions in various organisations and community. He is a member of the Technical Committee of NCRIB, Osun State Chapter and has served as the Vice Chairman of the Western Area Committee of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) from 2021 to 2023 before becoming the CHAIRMAN of the same Area Committee in 2023
He is happily married to two lovely wives – Hajia Morufat and Hajia Fatimah and specially blessed with amazing children.
