Ex-Kwara Gov Ahmed Granted N50m Bail
After spending two days in the custody of EFCC, the former Kwara syate Governor Ahmed has been granted N50 million bail.
During the Friday court appearance, allegations were presented, accusing Ahmed of misappropriating state funds during his tenure. The charges include diverting N1.6 billion allocated for security and operational costs in Kwara State to fund personal expenses, such as chartering private jets.
In light of the arraignment of former Kwara Governor Ahmed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 12-count charge related to fraud, the court has imposed specific conditions for his bail. As part of the bail terms, Ahmed is required to provide two sureties with landed properties in Ilorin and surrender his international passport.
Media access to the courtroom was restricted during Ahmed’s arraignment, raising concerns about transparency in the proceedings. The EFCC’s case outlines instances of fraudulent conversion, notably involving N400 million from a N1 billion short-term loan obtained by the Kwara State Government from Ecobank Nigeria Limited. These funds, originally intended for the completion of state projects, were allegedly misused under Ahmed’s administration.
____The EFCC specified in the charges, “Ahmed (while being the Governor of Kwara State) between 2015 and 2019 in Ilorin within the jurisdiction of this honourable court used an aggregate sum of N1,610,730,500, property of Kwara State Government, meant for the security and running cost of the Government of Kwara State, to charter private jets through Travel Messengers Limited on different occasions for your local travels and which sum you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of your unlawful act, to wit: criminal breach of trust or theft.
