Ending Female Genital Mutilation Is Our Collective Responsibilities – Aduke Obelawo
As the world marks Intentional Day for Eradication of Female Genital Mutilation, a Community Development Advocate, Mrs Aduke Obelawo has called on all community leaders, traditional institutions, parents and other relevant stakeholders to do all the needful to put a stop to Female Genital Mutilation in the country.
Obelawo made this call today while speaking with InsightMedia in Osogbo, on Thursday.
She said the practice has become old and outdated, adding that its negative impact has overpowered the reason behind.
Obelawo, who is the Osun State Focal Person for United Nations Population Fund, urged all stakeholders to work together towards ensuring the practice is put to an end.
According to her, “today, we join the global call for the Eradication of FGM. The practice has become so become so outdated and inimical to the safety of girl child. We must ensure that it’s put to an end.
“It’s a tradition but it has a lots of problems attached to it. It’s detrimental, unethical and against the right of girl child. It’s not socially acceptable in any way. So it must stop.
“We’re using today to appeal to parents, traditional institutions and all stakeholders to please safe the lives of our women and children by stopping this practice. Let’s embrace those part of our culture that are very positive and admirable to the world,” she added.
Obelawo added that her organization will continue to enlighten people on the danger associated with the practice.
