The political crisis in Rivers state has taken another shape as the Rivers State House of Assembly, under Speaker Martins Amaewhule, passed three critical bills into laws without Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s assent.

According to reports, this move follows constitutional guidelines that allow the legislature to bypass the governor’s approval when assent is withheld.

Reports revealed that the laws include the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) (Amendment) Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Bill 2024.

Recall that these bills had been previously forwarded to Governor Siminialayi Fubara but were stalled due to his inaction.

_____The session saw members unanimously support the decision, reinforcing the Assembly’s role in ensuring progress for the state.

Reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to upholding constitutional processes, the speaker promised to advance the interests of Rivers residents despite executive hurdles.

At the time of filing this report, no official response from the state governor on the development.
