AFRICAN HISTORY: CBCIU Celebrates Life Of Walter Rodney As Fagunwa Talks On Late Revolutionist’s Lifestyle

The initiative of the management of Centre For Black Culture and International Understanding to celebrate African History through the Monthly Seminar Series in Osogbo, the Osun State Capital was commended by people of different strata of life at the hallmarks of the seminar tagged “Walter Rodney; The Study In Revolution And Resistance” held on Friday, 28th February, 2020 at the CBCIU in Osogbo.

The guest lecturer, Mr Temitope Fagunwa of the Department of History and International Studies, Osun State University, Osogbo, elucidated in his speech how the life of the late African Revolutionist, who died at the age of 38 should be celebrated.

Fagunwa said the life of Walter Rodney was a great lesson to all generations as he dedicated his lifetime to advancement of human being and African race. He also berated the academics for isolating themselves from the community, which he described as the source of knowledge, called on the African youths to be ready for sacrifice as done by Rodney, in order to have the desired future.

Professor Siyan Oyeweso, who is the Executive Director, Center for Black Culture and International Understanding, said in his remark that the black month series is designed to celebrate the indelible contributions of black men to the development of the world, adding that the month is very significant in the history. As we are holding this event here, it’s going on concurrent across the globe.

“We have decided to celebrate Walter Rodney today. Rodney was a great man who live for thirty-eight years but made indelible marks. He sacrificed all luxuries towards the advancement of common people. This is why we’re still celebrating him forty years after his assassination,” Oyeweso added.


During their contributions, invited personalities at the at the event commended the initiative of the great idea of celebrating the African History. Amongst the eminent personalities at the event are: The Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Engr Sola Oladepo; Alh Kazeem Adio , Former Secretary to the Osun State Government; Some Culture promoters; Students of Masters Degree amongst others.
