WOMEN IN POLITICS: Here are what you probably don’t know about Osun former Deputy Governor, Titi Tomori as a complete woman
She started her political career after she voluntarily retired from active regular employment in 2006. In recognition of her wealth of experience at the public and private sectors, she was unanimously considered as the Deputy Governorship candidate to Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola. The mandate freely given by the good people of Osun State in the year 2007 was validated through a Court of Appeal Judgement in November, 2010.
During her deputy governorship assignment, she recorded enduring achievements in education sector through the innovative ideas of her governor Aregbesola.
– The exceptional and outstanding achievements of the Home Grown shool feeding and Health programme which the state rechristened O’MEALS and repackaged to provide a balanced diet which now entails feeding the pupils with chicken, fish, eggs, and beef along with vegetables, fruits and carbohydrates. The programme has positively impacted on the economy of the state as all the food consumed by the pupils is produced within the state.
O’MEALS has increased school enrollment and retention of pupils. It has also provided jobs opportunity for professional careers and improved the revenue of local farmers who are treated as partners. The programme which feeds pupils in primary 1 to 4 started in May 2012 with 155,318 pupils but feeds 252,000 pupils before leaving the office in 2018.
OPON IMO known as ‘Tablet of Knowledge’ was an innovative of Ogbeni Aregbesola administration during her tenure as the commissioner for education. OPON IMO consists of electronic version of textbooks, practice questions, past questions and lesson notes. In 2016, students in public schools had 46.7percent pass in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), a giant leap of over 300percent increase over than 2010 paltry 15percent pass which was the highest the state ever recorded before Aregbesola became the Governor.
Titi Laoye-Tomori was appointed by the Buhari/Idiagbon to serve on the Council of The Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti between 1984 and 1986. She was a member of the National Council of Women Society (NCWS) between 1985 and 1991. Member, Nigerian Association of University Women (1984 – 1991). National Treasurer, University of Lagos Alumni Association (1980 – 1982). Director of Public Affairs, Zonta International Club (1986 – 1991) Member of Board of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (2013).
In recognition of her commitment and love for her town, the Osogbo born former Deputy Governor of Osun, was honoured with the FIRST OSOGBO AMBASSADOR GOLDEN AWARD as the GOLDEN DAUGHTER of Osogbo in 2018 by Osogbo Peace and Unity Advocacy. She has personally empowered numerous Osun citizens, sponsored countless numbers of students through higher institutions, promoter of girl child education initiator, different types of women empowerment, and community sponsored programmes, a carering mother, an advocate of gender equality, mother of numerous motherless children, frequently cater for both pregnant and nursing mothers and a devoted Christian.
Tomori political career has put smiles on the faces of many Nigerians and impactful in many ways with facts and figures.
