The Chief Magistrate of Osogbo has on Wednesday ordered the remand of three suspects—Ayanda Olubunmi (45), Joshua Iyanda (24), and Prosper Iyanda (21)—at the Ilesa Correctional Center. The three were charged with conspiring to steal cocoa beans worth ₦4.5 million, belonging to Mr. Akeem Obidiran of Temidire Village in Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State.

The suspects were arraigned on two counts: conspiracy and theft, under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State 2002. The court read the charges aloud, stating that the suspects unlawfully removed cocoa beans from the residence of Mr. Obidiran, thereby committing felony theft.

The stolen cocoa beans, valued at ₦4.5 million, were found in the suspects’ possession after they had initially fled the scene. The Amotekun Corps, acting on a formal complaint filed by Mr. Obidiran, apprehended the suspects while they were en route to sell the stolen goods.

During court proceedings, the suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime, confirming their participation in the theft and burglary. They further stated that this was their first criminal offense.

The case, which was brought to court by the Osun Amotekun Corps through the Attorney General of Osun State, led to the court’s decision to remand the suspects in the Ilesa Correctional Center pending further proceedings. The next hearing is set for January 29, 2025.

In the court’s ruling, the Chief Magistrate emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and using the legal process as a deterrent for others involved in similar criminal activities.

The suspects are expected to remain in custody until the next hearing.
