The Ukrainian government has on Monday declared that a coup attempt had been prevented in the country.

According to reports, on Sunday, the nation celebrates Constitution Day, an unknown organisation allegedly sought to organise “provocations” in Kiev, according to the Sluzhba Bezpeky Ukrayiny (SBU) intelligence service and prosecutors.

Local reports had it that the coup intended to install a “provisional government” and occupy parliament while protesting.

However, four males who were detained are currently being probed by the SBU for guns and ammunition that were found during the course of the action, but if proven guilty, the suspects may spend a minimum of 10 years behind bars.

The authorities in the western Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankovsk are in charge of the probe while the Kiev government area has become a security zone, with limited entry and restricted demonstration rights.

The authorities frequently announce the arrests of informants and pro-Russian activists.
