Longest-Serving Senator Confirmed Dead
Dianne Feinstein, the longest-serving woman in the United States Senate, has passed away at the age of 90, as reported by US media outlets.
The exact cause of her death has not been immediately disclosed.
Feinstein, who represented California and was the Senate’s oldest member, grappled with health issues, including a battle with shingles.
A trailblazer in American politics, Feinstein was elected in 1992 as the first woman to represent California in the US Senate.
Over her career, she played pivotal roles in the Democratic Party, serving on influential committees and contributing to significant legislative accomplishments. In 2014, she spearheaded efforts to release a report on the CIA’s post-9/11 torture program.
In recent years, health concerns, including reports of short-term memory loss, raised questions about her fitness for office. Nevertheless, Feinstein consistently defended her effectiveness as a legislator.
She had announced her decision not to seek re-election in 2024 earlier this year.
Feinstein’s passing will impact the race to replace her in the Senate, as California Governor Gavin Newsom will now appoint someone to fill the vacancy until January 2025.
This appointee will have a significant advantage as an incumbent in the upcoming election. Newsom has previously stated his intent to appoint a Black woman if Feinstein did not complete her term.
