Undergraduate Convicted To Jail For Cheating, Personation
A Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin on Wednesday convicted a student of Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Mohammed Bello, over offences bordering on cheating by impersonation.
…..The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission secured the conviction of the student.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Adenike Akinpelu, said she was convinced that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and pronounced Bello guilty of the offence.
,,,,Akinpelu sentenced the defendant to six months in prison with ₦150,000 as option of fine on count one and another six months in prison, with ₦100,000 as option of fine on count two.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of the iPhone Xr, which was used to perpetrate the crime, and the sum of $25 that the convict benefited from the unlawful activities to the Federal Government.
Bello, an indigene of Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State allegedly posed as a white female with intent to defraud unsuspecting victims.
…..On April 22, EFCC, while acting on credible intelligence, arrested Bello alongside other suspected fraudsters at Agric Estate, Sango area of Ilorin.
,,,,The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge, upon arraignment in court.
The Prosecutor, Andrew Akoja, reviewed the facts of the case through a witness who is an operative of the commission.
……Akoja tendered the extrajudicial statements of the defendant, one iPhone Xr and fraudulent messages printed from his device as exhibits.
