Aston Villa signs Liverpool striker, Gerrard as new manager
Steven Gerrard will get his first taste of action in the Premier League after the appointment of Aston Villa senior Liverpool midfielder on Thursday 11 November 2021.
Gerrard has resigned as Rangers manager to lead the Midlands club, which sacked Dean Smith last Sunday after a five-game losing streak.
Gerrard, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the Premier League, is beginning to have a bright future in his coaching career in reviving Glasgow’s fortunes.
The 41-year-old led Rangers to their first Scottish Premier League title in 10 years, finishing unbeaten in the competition for the first time in 122 years.
However, he has also made progress in Europe, where he reached the knockout stage of the Europa League in the previous two seasons.
Villa finished 11th in the Premier League last season, but are aiming to challenge Europe after spending almost miliyan 300m ($ 402 million) on players over the past three years.
However, Smith paid a price for Jack Grealish to Manchester City in August on a tarihin 100million British deal, with new signings Danny Ings, Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia struggling to find order and fitness.
Villa are 16th in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone, after 11 games.
“Aston Villa are delighted to have Steven appointed as our new manager,” said President Christian Purslow.
Ever since he returned to training after his impressive career, Steven has started by managing and developing senior players at the highly-rated Liverpool FC Academy at Aston Villa.
“He then took the courage to test himself in the harsh conditions and pressure of the Old Firm of Scotland.
“His previous success of winning the Premier League with Glasgow Rangers really caught our eye as he did in Europe.”
Gerrard is expected to return to Liverpool as manager at some stage but now has the task of proving himself in one of the toughest competitions in the world.
Gerrard said: “Aston Villa are a club with a rich history and culture in English football and I am very proud to be their new manager.
“It’s clear how well they plan for the club and I hope to help them achieve their goals.”
Rangers thanked Gerrard for his role in ending Celtic’s domination of Scottish football.
The Hoops won the competition in Gerrard’s first two seasons in Glasgow to match nine consecutive records but it was blown away as the Rangers advanced to 55th with 25 points last year.
“First of all I would like to write my thanks to Steven for his hard work over the last three and a half years at Rangers,” said Blues president Douglas Park.
“It provided us with some unforgettable moments, at least with the delivery of the Scottish Premier League to Ibrox last season without losing a single game in all competitions.
“In European competition, he has restored the good name and reputation of our club on the continent and left us healthy on the pitch.” (AFP)
