Nigerian women are capable of taking mantle of leadership across levels but… Taiwo Oluga

The only current female federal lawmaker from Osun State at the 9th national assembly, Honorable Taiwo Oluga has reafirmd that Nigerian women have what it takes to occupy the mantle of leadership in any capacity in the polity, OSUNREPORTERS NEWS gathered.

Oluga, who is representing Ayedaade, Isokan and Irewole Federal Constituency in Osun State at the green chamber made this known while responding to questions from journalists and editors of various online news mediums at the Monthly Media Parley of Osun Online Media Practitioners Association (OOMPA) on Monday in Osogbo, Osun State at Ben Ber Event Hall, Ring Road.

While responding to a question on why enough women are yet to be found in every public offices, she explained that capable Nigerian women are many to occupy any public office even as President or governor in Nigeria.

She further pointed at Nigeria at 61 of independence but no woman has ever become Governor not to talk of President in this country, adding that the population of women in politics and governance is improving while National Assembly has embarked on various sensitization and laws that can accommodate women in Nigeria politics.

‘’Even in the United States which has been in practicing democracy for over 200 years, only just of recent had a female vice-President’’. ‘’But, I can tell you that in Nigeria of today, I can name more than ten (10) competent women who can contest for the position of President and Governor.

“The mean issue is for the society most especially our men to accommodate and give women chance’’. Even one of our women in Taraba State was almost there in the governorship race in the previous elections before her demise.

‘’Our women are capable and we have what it takes to take the mantle of leadership in the polity’’.’’ I say to our men, please accommodate us’’. ‘’We want to assist you, we want to do what you are doing,” she said.

The female parliamentarian, added that the first Index case of COVID-19 test in Nigeria was discovered by a female in Ogun State but when the government started to find solution the woman was neglected.

‘’Currently, I am the Chairman House Committee on Women Affairs and we have proposed in the House that additional seats be provided for women in the green Chamber and I give kudos to all female parliamentarian at present for our roles in promoting gender equality,” she added.

Oluga also pointed out her efforts in discharging the legislative duties and efforts in bringing dividend of democracy to her constituents.

“I have proposed several bills in the house of Representatives to address issues affecting our people and the youths in Nigeria in less than 24 months in office.’’

‘’For instance, the provision of 132/133KVA Electricity Sub-station for Ayedaade, Isokan and Irewole Federal Constituency’’. This was to improve the economic activities and security in the areas. I have also executed many feasible projects such as the construction of a block of classrooms for schools, laptops and science equipment and other educational materials for primary schools in my constituency’’, she said.


“I have organized sporting activities in order to bring out the best talents among the youths. Essay Competition for Students in higher institutions (during Covi-19) where the best 3 students were rewarded accordingly.’ Assisting market women with soft loans of at least N500, 000 at each local government where small scale business owners benefited. We also trained these rural women in the area of fish breeding, snail, and rabbit rearing,” Oluga explained.
